The EMDR therapy protocol involves eight phases, starting with the client’s history and treatment planning. During subsequent sessions, the therapist guides the client through the EMDR protocol, targeting specific memories or experiences. The number of sessions required with an EMDR therapist may vary depending on the complexity of the issues to be addressed.
Each EMDR session consists of several sets of bilateral stimulation, during which the client focuses on the targeted memory or experience. The therapist helps the client process any associated thoughts, emotions, or sensations that arise. Over time, the distress associated with the targeted memory diminishes, and the client gains a new perspective and sense of resolution.
