Bilateral stimulation is one of the key pieces of EMDR therapy, involving rhythmic sensory input to facilitate the processing of distressing memories. EMDR therapy is an evidence-based method used by psychologists to treat conditions such as trauma and PTSD, anxiety and depression. More information about EMDR Therapy >
In EMDR therapy, bilateral stimulation works by activating both sides of the brain, allowing for processing memories and emotions that may be ‘stuck’ in the brain due to traumatic experiences. It is believed to help ‘unstick’ such memories so that they can be processed and resolved.
Bilateral stimulation by itself may be built into activities you may find relaxing, such as running or walking, where your alternating feet hitting the pavement may help you activate both sides of your brain. Another example is tapping on a drum with alternating hands or listening to a song alternating tapping your legs or fingers on the steering wheel are also examples.
EMDR therapy should not be done on yourself. It requires a trained psychologist with knowledge and understanding of the treatment method and the ability to implement the protocol and adjust the bilateral stimulation so that you can have the best results possible in a safe manner.
